“Relationships need nurturing. Build up your emotional account with kind words and actions. Be careful and gracious with critique. Let people know that you appreciate what they do for you, or that you’re glad they’re part of your life.”

It's unfortunate that we’re not taught the art of communication in a more positive way from an early age. Oftentimes observation is not our best teacher or mentor.

Instead, we learn to communicate with mixed and incomplete messages that mask our intentions, lead to upsets, and misunderstandings.

Be careful in conversations.

  1. Avoid ignoring or insulting.

  2. When in doubt ask for clarification.

  3. Be careful with emotions that hurt, especially anger.

The Best Part of Values-Based Communication

  • By practicing the various skills of values-based communication, you will both feel like you have been respected and understood.

  • Values-based communication is the most compassionate way of relating to anyone.

  • Communication is a learned ability which like any skill, improves with practice. If you want to, you will definitely see a desireable transition.

  • Our first step towards being understood and understanding others is being mindful of our thoughts and keeping our words kindhearted.

  • These skills that you'll practice are worthy of sharing with those you care to have a good relationship with.
